Clinton Park Police Incident

A young man, 18, who had a gun with him at Clinton Park near Grant and Penticton streets was shot and killed by police on Saturday morning in East Vancouver.

The Vancouver Police Department said in a statement that officers responded to a 911 call about gunshots near the playground around 2:15 a.m. on Saturday in the Hastings-Sunrise area.

Const. Tania Visintin said that the police found the man with a gun when they arrived.

The police fired shots at the suspect, who was taken to the hospital and later died.

Visintin said in a statement that no police officers or bystanders were injured during the incident or after the initial 911 call.

She did not answer when asked what kind of gun the 18-year-old had during a news conference on Saturday.

She said that the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), which investigates all B.C. police incidents that result in serious injury or death, will look into that and other details of the shooting.

“The IIO will be investigating into that who shot, how many times they fired, what they shot, what type of firearm, if it was real or fake,” she said.

She also said that investigators do not believe that the incident was related to gang violence in the Lower Mainland.

The IIO asked anyone who has more information about the case to contact them at 1-855-446-8477 or through their website at iiobc.ca.

The IIO’s investigation aims to gather all relevant evidence and information to provide a clear picture of what happened and how police were involved in the man’s death.
