Yang’s parents hailed from Shanghai.

They relocated to Hong Kong, Yang’s birthplace.

In 2000 the family immigrated to the United States, settling in Los Angeles, California.

They joined Yang’s aunt and grandmother, who were already residing there.

This move aimed to provide Yang and his brother, Roy, with better educational opportunities. Initially, Yang attended John Burroughs Middle School before transferring to Beverly Hills High School.

In 2009, Yang graduated from the University of California, San Diego, majoring in economics. Notably, Mike Judge, also a UCSD alumnus, served as the commencement speaker. Subsequently, Judge would become Yang’s showrunner for Silicon Valley.

Yang began his stand-up career at 21, known as “Lowball Jim” at a club in North Hollywood. Despite interning at Smith Barney after college, he found it unfulfilling and returned to San Diego.
